Introducing the 2024-25 AJKD Editorial Interns
As we enter year seven of the AJKD Editorial Internship Program, the editors were once again delighted by the many qualified applicants who responded to our recent call for applications.
Please join us in welcoming the AJKD Editorial Internship Class of 2025: Jillian Caldwell, Benjamin Catanese, Api Chewcharat, Madhumitha Rajagopal, and Somaya Zahran.
Jillian Caldwell is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Clinical Scholar in the Division of Nephrology at Stanford University. She completed her internal medicine training at the University of Illinois at Chicago and her clinical nephrology training at Stanford University where she obtained a Master of Science in Health Policy. Her research focuses on exploring the intended (and sometimes unintended) consequences of health policies and healthcare delivery for the end-stage kidney disease population. In her free time, she can be found on her Peloton or hanging out with her husband and four cats. Follow her @jcaldwelldo.
Dr. Benjamin Catanese is a current clinical research fellow in the Duke Division of Nephrology and a research fellow at the Duke Clinical Research Institute pursuing a Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Research. He attended medical school at New York Medical College and completed internal medicine residency at Stanford University. Dr. Catanese’s research interests center around improving outcomes at the intersection between cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. His long-term goal is to become an independent investigator and clinical trialist with a focus on developing novel methods to reduce cardiovascular complications experienced by patients with chronic kidney disease. When he is not learning R programming, he enjoys spending time with his wife, two dogs, and cat, and training for marathons. Follow him @Ben_Catanese.
Dr. Api Chewcharat is currently a clinical and research fellow at Brigham and Women’s hospital (BWH)/Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Nephrology combined program. His hometown is Bangkok, Thailand. He earned a Master of Public Health in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from Harvard T.H. Chan School of public health before completing his internal medicine residency at Mount Auburn Hospital/Harvard medical school. His research focuses on onconephrology and causal inference. Outside of medicine, he enjoys swimming, biking, playing video games and cooking. Follow him @Api_chew.
Dr. Rajagopal is a research-track nephrology fellow at the Mount Sinai hospital. She received a Ph.D. in Molecular Cellular Physiology from the University of California, Davis and an M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She then pursued an ABIM Research pathway residency at The Mount Sinai hospital and stayed on for Nephrology fellowship. Her research publications include basic science research identify pathways involved in the regulation of epithelial ion transport pathways in the renal tubule. She is now interested in using computational approaches to identify markers of renal disease and uncover potential therapeutic targets. After fellowship, she intends to remain in academic medicine and pursue her interests in research and patient care.
Dr Somaya Zahran is currently a Nephrology fellow at McGill University. She obtained her medical degree from Egypt before moving to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to pursue a PhD in structural biology in the University of Alberta where she was an executive committee member for the Muslim and the Egyptian student associations. She completed her internal medicine residency at McGill University in Montreal, Canada where she served as a VP academic then a chief medical resident. Somaya aspires to become a clinician scientist practicing transplant nephrology. She is passionate about both regenerative medicine and epidemiological research. In her free time, she enjoys baking and nature walks.
