SLED or slow low efficiency dialysis is a hybrid form of dialysis that takes the best parts of intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). The use of SLED allows for the utilization of existing dialysis equipment and staff resulting in lower cost than CRRT. SLED uses slower blood flow rates, ultrafiltration rates and solute removal rates than IHD. However, the intermittant nature of SLED leads to medication dosing and volume control issues as compared to CRRT.
