Open dissection was the first technique described for placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter. The learning curve is less steep and this technique doesn’t require an expensive laparoscope. However, recent advances in laparoscopy and percutanous (fluoroscopically guided) placement are beginning to make this option less attractive.
