Kidney Week 2012: Quality and Safety in Nephrology

Sharon Anderson, MD

An increasing interest in the Nephrology community and the American Society of Nephrology is the quality and safety of nephrology care. “Choosing Wisely” is a good example. Developed in partnership with the American Board of Internal Medicine, the ASN, and Consumer Reports, this campaign advocates for improving the delivery of efficient, cost-effective care that is tailored to the patient with chronic kidney disease. Key points include the following: the use of erythropoietin stimulating agents, peripheral catheter use, maintenance dialysis initiation considerations, and the role of age-related cancer screening tests. An emerging field in medicine, fellowship opportunities are popping up in the advanced study of patient safety and quality healthcare delivery. For additional information, see Williams et al CJASN article or download a brochure on Choosing Wisely.
