Cefepime&MentalStatus

The 4th generation beta lactam cefepime is associated with confusion, hallucinations, agitation, coma, myoclonus, and seizures. Cefepime’s neurotoxicity, almost exclusively occurring in patients with AKI or CKD, results from competitive antagonism of the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain (gamma-aminobutyric acid, GABA).
