One of the most sensitive markers to predict outcomes in patients on dialysis is albumin. Conventional wisdom has long held that low serum albumin is an indicator of inadequate nutrition and/or protein intake. Increased nutritional support either by oral or intravenous support can increase albumin, marginally. However, debate still persists about how changing albumin through nutritional supplementation ultimately affect long term outcomes.
