HIV associated nephropathy (HIVAN) has seen a dramatic decline in the last decade with the advent of aggressive antiretroviral therapy for HIV. HIVAN results from direct viral infection of podocyte and tubular cells of the kidney. Evolving evidence has identified that genetic predisposition (particularly the APOL1 allele) plays an important role in HIVAN.
