#NephMadness 2020: Thank You

The NephMadness Court of Champions welcomes a new member: SGLT2 Without Diabetes Mellitus.

Every year, there are NephMadness surprises such as an unexpected pick by the Blue Ribbon Panel or a virtual NephMadness party house. This year, the big story was, inevitably, COVID-19. Realizing that many of our participants would be serving on the front lines, we were conscious of not overloading the nephrology community. We extended the bracket submission window to 7 weeks and tried out best to reduce the volume of email messaging. We understandably saw reduced participation and engagement, but it was still our hope that NephMadness 2020 served as a much-needed distraction amidst the pandemic.

There was increased international representation this year – slightly over half of NephMadness entries came from outside the United States:

After announcing the 2020 Champion and Winners, we would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s NephMadness a reality (apologies in advance if we inadvertently missed anyone):

AJKD Editors

Blue Ribbon Panel

Selection Committee

Region Writers

Commentary Contributors

Visual Abstract Creators

NSMC Interns

AJKD Social Media Advisory Group

These folks didn’t fit into a neat category but NephMadness 2020 would not have been possible without them:

  • NephTwitter as always for vibrant discussion and debate
  • Cathy Quinlan @KidneyCathy for her helpful explainer video
  • II Klinika Nefrologii UMB @IINefroUMB for their party post
  • The Curbsiders @thecurbsiders for the entertaining and informative podcasts
  • Ariella Coler-Reilly @AriellaStudies for illustrations
  • Peter Dong @peter_dong11 for designing the 2020 logo (check out more of his work here)
  • Susan Allison for arranging free Nature Reviews Nephrology subscription for the Grand Prize Winners
  • Sarah Pratta and Nancy Rolya at Elsevier
  • National Kidney Foundation @nkf @NKF_NephPros
  • AJKD Staff: Nijsje Dorman, Alina Foo, Noah Skaroff, Andrew Fleming, Barb Saper, and Flora Ho

And finally, a special THANK YOU to all of our game players!

We wish you all the best as you take care of your patients and each other, and here’s hoping for a slightly less dramatic setting for NephMadness 2021!
